AWS Engineer or Solutions Architect? Start with the Decision You Need Made
Similar titles, different accountabilities
An AWS engineer and an AWS solutions architect may both discuss networking, security and infrastructure as code. That does not mean they are interchangeable hires.
The engineer is usually accountable for building and operating working systems. The architect is usually accountable for shaping the solution, aligning stakeholders and making decisions that guide implementation. Some organisations need one person to do both, but the brief should say so clearly.
Define the decision before the title
Ask what the business needs this person to decide in the next two quarters:
- How should workloads move from a data centre to AWS?
- Which services should be standardised for product teams?
- How do we reduce cloud cost without affecting reliability?
- How should an application be deployed, monitored and recovered?
The answer changes the search. Migration strategy and executive communication point toward architecture leadership. Terraform modules, CI/CD pipelines and incident response point toward platform or cloud engineering.
Be precise about hands-on expectations
“Must be hands-on” can mean anything from reviewing pull requests to spending most of the week writing infrastructure code. State the expected balance. Candidates who enjoy delivery may be disappointed by a role dominated by workshops; candidates who are strongest in architecture may not want an on-call-heavy position.
Also describe the maturity of the environment. Is there an established landing zone, or will the hire create the first account structure? Are security controls centralised? Does a platform team exist? Context helps candidates evaluate the opportunity and helps interviewers assess experience fairly.
Certifications are signals, not substitutes
AWS certifications can show structured learning and broad exposure, but they do not prove that someone has made good production decisions. Explore a real design they owned, the constraints they faced, what failed, and what they would change now.
The best cloud hires can explain a solution in language that works for engineers, finance leaders and operational teams. That communication is part of the technical role, not a separate bonus.
When the hiring team defines the decisions, operating context and hands-on expectations first, “AWS engineer” and “solutions architect” become useful labels instead of sources of confusion.
